The Castle

based on the novel by Franz Kafka

A Winter Journey by NOVOFLOT
New production

For their new production THE CASTLE, NOVOFLOT moves into the Haus der Berliner Festspiele – with texts by Franz Kafka, Lied by Franz Schubert, new compositions by Aleksandra Gryka, trombone improvisations by Nils Wogram and live-drawings by Ulrich Scheel.

In the cold store of literary fiction a perpetually puzzling place is kept: Kafka’s “Castle“ is a mysterious power, to which the land surveyor K. seeks access all his life – without success. A century before someone else crossed the same freezing zone: Franz Schubert measured the same territory with the “Winter Journey“, in which K. some hundred years later gets lost.

NOVOFLOT sets up an audio experiment by overlaying the novel with Lied and subtitling Kafka with Schubert. Re-mastered this way, “The Castle“, obtains a ‘digital emotional track’ through the Winter Journey, which Kafka’s novel decodes supposedly without any trouble. Soon interfering frequencies become audible at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, though. Schubert mutates to a rampant cancer. Everybody is watching how the stranger, land surveyor K., multiplies himself into many K-points wandering erratically around.

NOVOFLOT looks for the human that leads us deeply inside our personality. A master plan of the castle is designed, one that resembles the branches of the brain. However, the labyrinth of synapses does not yet function as a map in our search for the human. When the exhausted K. finally falls asleep, jazz trombone player Nils Wogram embarks on his last journey. The castle opens its doors. And the K-points tie together to a line, to an alignment.
